5 out of 5 stars This is my trimmer   January 24, 2010
RetiredProf (East Texas)
This is my fourth string trimmer after one electric and two gas powered string trimmers. The first two used .080 string. The electric had an automatic feed which was useless. The second one, which was my first gas powered trimmer, had bump feed, also useless. It had a 4-cycle engine and not a lot of power. Eventually the engine stopped working. The.080 string doesn't last very long. The third one was a 2-cycle gas trimmer and used 17" lengths of .105 string. That worked great. Even though changing string was a slight nuisance, the .105 string lasts so much longer that it is well worth it. Of course, the only cost effective way to do this is to buy a roll of string and cut it yourself. The pre-cut stuff is just too expensive. However, sadly, the engine didn't last. So I found the Poulan Pro and it had all the features I wanted. It starts easy, weighs about the same, has a nice D handle, and the head is interchangeable with my old trimmer. I can also interchange the brush cutter head from my old trimmer. The head calls for a slightly different size string, but the .105 works great and you can get it in bulk. I use this trimmer to maintain 5 miles of bike trails, so it gets a workout.

3 out of 5 stars Carb ajustment and trimmer line   January 1, 2010

The trimmer was easy to start initially but unlike other trimmers if it cuts out you have to put it back on choke to get it started again. My machine does not idle and often cuts out when on full trottle. Ajusting the carb screws would solve this problem but you need a special tool to do this. This tool does not come with the machine and is hard to get. The line assembly is wasteful. Every time the string gets too short you have to throw away about 7 inches of string. I changed the head to get rid of this problem. WHERE CAN I GET THE TOOL TO AJUST THE CARB?

YOU CANNOT BUY BULK TRIMMER LINE FOR THIS TRIMMER. POULAND SPECIFIES THAT YOU SHOULD ONLY USE .115 DIAMETER TRIMMER LINE. NOBODY SELLS IT, BUT POULAN, OF COURSE, AND THEN ONLY IN PRECUT PRICEY SMALL PACKAGES. I HAVE LOOKED EVERYWHERE FOR .115 LINE. IT'S NOWHERE TO BE HAD. THIS TRIMMER MAY SEEM LIKE A DEAL, BUT WHAT YOU SAVE YOU WILL SPEND LATER BUYING GOURMET TRIM LINE. I'M SORRY I BOUGHT IT.

1st week I was impressed...lots of power, much quieter than other machines I've owned.

2nd week I was using it with the hedge trimmer attachment which is supposed to be ran at full throttle. After several minutes at full throttle the engine started bogging down and stalling when I let it idle. I increased the idle speed adjustment and it quit stalling though the engine would not operate at full throttle (still bogged down).

3rd week the unit worked OK, though I only did light trimming.

4th week I attempted more heavier work and found that the assist handle would not stay straight (constantly had to jerk it back upright). Completely frustrated with this (plus the bogging problem) I contacted Poulan and explained my issues. They sent me another assist handle and recommended I take the unit to a local authorized repair center (they gave 4 names and phone numbers in my area). All 4 of them told me that it would be a minimum of 2 weeks before they would do the repair. Still frustrated with the assist handle I asked them for advice. They contacted Poulan for me and Poulan agreed to send them a J-Handle (optional handle for the blade attachment-which I don't have) to replace the stupid piece of crap handle that came with the machine. I could not do without the machine for 2 weeks so I decided to take it back home for another try.

5th week I used it for about 1 hour with no really big problems, though still frustrated with having to constantly jerk the assist handle back upright. The replacement handle sent to me by Poulan was NO BETTER than the original. I stopped using it for lunch and went back to start it again and the starter cord would not recoil. Here I go again to the repair shop...once again they can't fix it for at least 2 weeks...but I did pickup the J-Handle and took both it and the machine back home. I called 3 more authorized service centers and all of them again told me it would be at least 2 weeks before they could fix it. Completely frustrated with the machine (which of course us useless at this point), I called Amazon to see what my options were. Amazon could not authorize any return/refund since it was past 30 days. They advised me to cantact Poulan to see if they would authorize a return. I contacted Poulan and explained that I could not wait 2 weeks for repairs and the unit was just over 30 days old. Poulan authorized me to return the unit for a refund, though I would have to pay the cost of return shipping. I returned the unit to Poulan and I am waiting for the check.

I went to Tractor Supply and purchased the Husqvarna 128LD. Tractor Supply assured me that they would exchange the unit in-store if I purchased the extended warranty. The price for the unit was 179.99 (on sale) + 29.99 for the 2-year extended warranty. With the extended warranty the machine has full in-store replacement warranty for 4 years (2 year factory warranty + 2 year extended warranty). The Husqvarna 128LD is also sold at Lowes for 199.00, though Lowes onle offers a 1 year extended warranty for 24.95. There was a lot of features I liked MUCH better than the Poulan even though they are actually the same company (Husqvarna owns Poulan). I considered this to be a worthwhile purchase even though it was considerably more expensive. I could have gone to Sears and purchased the same machine as the Poulan PP133 (different color under the Sears Craftsman name...though the exact same machine, only cheaper), though I was not convinced that that would be a good idea (I'm very unsure of the Sears stability at this time).

3 out of 5 stars Good but Incredibly heavy and temper mental   September 14, 2009

I had read some of the earlier reviews about the PP125 so I went to the PP133. Guess what, the PP133 came with the same hard to start and carb adjustment needs as the PP125( read the reviews here on Amazon). So I went to ebay and bought the carb adjustment tool ($10 with shipping). Mine still takes 5 or 6 pulls to start. I was able to get the high end adjusted correctly but it will still not idle properly, so I have to keep the engine revved or it will die.

The string does rotate counterclockwise, which means, if you are right-handed, everything you cut is thrown back at your legs, so you need to dedicate a pair of pants for trimming since you will never get them clean. The Gas cap is quite hard to take off and put on. I keep thinking the threads are crossed and yes, it will leak gas out the cap if tilted. I bought the brush cutter separately so I swapped out the Loop handle for the Bar handle that came with the brush cutter and installed the over-the-shoulder strap that came with the brush cutter. You will definitely need these since this trimmer is heavy and very tiring. If you are trimming a large area, be sure and take along your gallon can of mixed gas with you since you will be refilling the tank quite often. In my case hoofing it back to the garden shed became old real quick!

Now for the good part. This thing really cuts grass and weeds. Be sure and order extra strings since I was unable to find them at Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Atwoods etc. Strings are precut 18" long but are .115 thick and are unique. They work well cutting through everything but woody stuff. For things like sumac an inch or less the brush cutter attachment works well.

I think I will eventually get it adjusted but you shouldn't have to do this for a new trimmer.
